Long-time Eagle Pass head coach Tom Gonzalez announced his retirement on Thursday after spending the last 18 seasons leading the Eagles, compiling a 111-81 overall record with three district championships in 2017, 2020 and 2022.

“After careful consideration, I have decided to retire from my position as the Head Football Coach at Eagle Pass High School,” Gonzalez said in the post. “Football has been great to my family and myself. It has been an incredible journey filled with unforgettable moments, challenges and victories that will last a lifetime. Building relationships as I help kids grow personally and achieve goals athletically is what I will miss the most. Coaching isn’t about winning and losing. At the high school level, coaching is about molding teenagers into men and becoming positive, productive members of society and for this, I would like to thank the parents for allowing us to do so year in and year out.”

Gonzalez also took time to thank all his players past and present in his statement along with all of his assistant coaches during his tenure leading the Eagles.

“I love my players and I feel like we have the greatest job in the world because we get to work with dedicated, talented athletics-but simply put, it’s now time for me to move on to the next chapter of my life,” he said.

Eagle Pass has not yet posted the job, but with the early May timing of the announcement it will not be a shock to anyone if EPISD decides to stay internal with this hire, especially considering Eagle Pass’ run of recent success with seven consecutive playoff appearances.
