Forney ISD made things official on Tuesday naming former McKinney High head coach Marcus Shavers as the next head coach at North Forney High School.

Shavers, who stepped down from his post at McKinney in December, replaces Eric Luster, who departed in late March to take over as head coach at Brazoswood.

“I’m grateful to have found what I believe is a perfect situation for me and my family," Shavers said. "To say I’m excited is an understatement. I’m so eager to get to campus, meet the kids, parents, the faculty and the entire community of North Forney. This a great opportunity to build something special at North Forney and make it one of the premier places in the state. The administration and the facility upgrades are first-class."

Shavers, a native of Allen, has a career head coaching record of 55-37 in eight seasons. He also played his college football at the University of Arkansas. He spent the past six seasons leading McKinney High to four playoff appearances, a pair of bi-district titles and a trip to the regional semifinals in 2022.

The new head coach at North Forney began his head coaching career at Lubbock Estacado in 2016. He spent two seasons leading the Matadors where he posted an 18-6 mark, leading EHS to back-to-back bi-district titles and a 10-2 mark in 2017.

Prior to taking over at Estacado, Shavers started his coaching career as an assistant at Wichita Falls High where he spent four seasons, his final two seasons there as the defensive coordinator. Shavers moved back to the DFW area in 2013 when he took over as West Mesquite's defensive coordinator for three seasons (2013-15).

Shavers said he will not have North Forney participate in spring football due to the timing of his hiring, instead he will use the remainder of the offseason as an evaluation period for the kids and remaining coaching staff.

“This will be the most important summer of my career," he said. "We are starting late, so we are going to do an accelerated strength and speed program, but with a massive emphasis on skills since we’ll have a lot of install period as well.

"I plan on trying to enter us in two 7-on-7 state qualifiers as well and we’ll use those tournaments to evaluate our kids in a competitive setting against some good competition. Our coaching staff will be working on building culture during the summer and that starts on June 3."
