Roy "Father" Lumpkin was a three-time all-state guard/tackle at Oak Cliff in 1923-25. At 6-2 and 211 pounds, he was a three-year starter for a Georgia Tech team that won the national championship in 1928 and beat California, 8-7, in the 1929 Rose Bowl. He went on to play eight pro seasons with the Portsmouth Spartans (1930-33), Detroit Lions (1934) and Brooklyn Dodgers (1935-37), earning second-team All-Pro honors in 1930 and first-team in 1932, and boxed professionally in the off-season. Lumpkin died on March 31, 1974, at age 66.
