Coach Robert Brown is a life member of the Texas High School Coaches Association. He became chairman of PVILCA, Prairie View Interscholastic League Coaches Association, in 2004.
At that time, he had a vision to not only induct coaches; but outstanding PVIL high school athletes as well. He also initiated the PVILCA to give scholarships to high school athletes. Coach
Brown had a vision to educate the public about the PVIL; former athletes, coaches and their outstanding accomplishments. He has collected memorabilia and artifacts pertaining to years of
the PVIL existence. The University of Texas housed the PVIL memorabilia at the Marvin C. Griffith building in Austin, Texas from 2010 until 2017. Coach Brown graduated from Texas Southern University with a Bachelor’s degree Physical Education in 1962. He later completed a Master’s in Administration. In 1963, he began a 40 year teaching and coaching career with Houston Independent School District. In 1968, at the age of 28; he became the youngest HISD 4A high school head coach at MC Williams High School. He coached basketball, track and baseball at several high schools in HISD including Jefferson Davis, Ross S. Sterling, and Robert E. Lee. After retirement in 2002; he continued coaching basketball for AAU teams and private schools in the Houston area. Coach Brown continues to encourage young coaches and athletes to recognize the impact and the importance of those who paved the way for the current generation of African American players and coaches. Coach Brown has been married for 60 years to Barbara; and they have 3 adult children.
