McConachie joined the Texas High School Football Coaches Association in 1947 as executive secretary, and later became athletic director at Texas A&M before joining the faculty at Sam Houston State. “Mr. Mac,” as his peers called him, worked with the THSCA for 34 years, and assisted in getting Congress to pass a bill protecting the nation’s high school teams from competing against televised pro games on Friday and Saturday nights. He established TEXAS COACH magazine in 1957, and earlier was acclaimed an outstanding secondary school administrator, athletic director of El Paso public schools, principal of Edna High School and a state championship tennis coach in El Paso.
