The versatile Wylie excelled no matter where his coaches lined him up on the football field. Starting at split end for Henderson as a sophomore, he led the state in receiving. Moved to tailback as a junior, he earned all-state honors the next two seasons, racking up 2,812 yards as a senior. He ended his high school career with 5,804 all-purpose yards, and was also a standout in baseball and track, where he qualified for state in the discus and high hurdles and won the 330 intermediates. Ranked among the state's top football recruits, he signed with Oklahoma and played halfback in the Sooners' vaunted wishbone alongside Gregg Pruitt and Jack Mildren, receiving all-Big 8 recognition in 1970, when he ran for 984 yards and scored 13 touchdowns. He also set a Sooners record for kick return average at 25.7 yards.
