Lott is perhaps better known as the state’s best high jumper of all time, setting a national schoolboy record of 7 feet, 4¾ inches, and winning seven Southwest Conference titles and four NCAA championships. But he also was one of the premier defensive backs in the state at Refugio, earning first-team all-state honors in 1982, PARADEAll-America recognition and a place on TEXAS FOOTBALL magazine’s All-Decade Team for the 1980s. Lott was a three-year football letterman at Texas who spent two seasons in the Arena League before pursuing a coaching career.
