After starting his senior season (1968) at quarterback for Houston Elmore, Pruitt made the transition to a combination back and receiver. The move played to his strengths, as his career would attest. He was a two-time all-America running back at Oklahoma (1971-72), where he rushed for 2,844 yards and scored 232 points for the Sooners. As a kick returner and all-purpose back, Pruitt played nine seasons for the NFL's Cleveland Browns (1973-81) and was named to the Pro Bowl in 1974, ’75 and ’78.
