Dial was a three-time all-district end/linebacker at Magnolia High School. Dial led his team to bi-district victories his junior and senior seasons. Magnolia lost in the class B regional championship game to Sugar Land (13-6) in 1953 and Barbers Hill (18-13) in 1954. Dial scored 84 points his senior season and earned a scholarship to Rice Institute where he lettered from 1956-1958. He made All-SWC end for the Owls in 1957 and 1958. His junior year he helped lead Rice to a SWC title and was a consensus All-America as a senior. He played pro football for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1959-1963 earning a trip to the Pro Bowl in 1962. He finished his career with the Dallas Cowboys from 1964-1966. Dial was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1993.
