McQueen graduated from Temple High in 1956 after earning letters in football, basketball, baseball and track. After graduating from Tulsa where he played football, McQueen won three district titles at Mexia High School (1964-67), including the school’s first in 16 seasons. McQueen was an assistant to SMU Coach Hayden Fry for three seasons before returning to Temple in 1972. In 28 years at Temple, McQueen compiled an impressive 243-77-7 record. His Wildcats had 19 seasons with eight or more wins, won 14 district titles, qualified for the playoffs 18 times and advanced to the state championship game three times. The Wildcats won the state championship in 1979 and 1992. During his coaching career, McQueen received a multitude of honors at both the state and national levels, including National Coach of the Year runner-up in 1979-80. In addition, McQueen and his staff coached the winning team at the THSCA All-Star Game in 1979 and the Oil Bowl in 1980.  In his final game as a coach, McQueen led the West squad to an 18-15 victory in the first U.S. Army All-American Bowl Game in 2001. He was selected by the Waco Tribune Herald as the coach for the Super Centex Golden Anniversary Football Team.
