Stamps was an exceptional two-way star at Corsicana from 1928-30. The two-time all-state guard was chosen as the outstanding schoolboy lineman in the Southwest in 1930 and voted that same year as the greatest guard in Texas schoolboy history by the state's sportswriters. Stamps went on to play on the 1935 SMU team that beat second-ranked TCU and Sammy Baugh for the Southwest Conference title and was voted national champion before a Rose Bowl loss to Stanford. After serving in World War II, he was a successful high school coach in Texas and Oklahoma before ending his coaching career at Midwestern University in Wichita Falls (18-11-2 from 1948-50).
