Texas Tech started July off right, landing the commitment of Cypress Falls linebacker Kaleb Burns. The Red Raiders beat out Baylor and SMU for his verbal pledge.

Burns, DCTF's No.9-ranked linebacker prospect, was the District 16-6A Co-Defensive MVP after tallying 73 tackles, 18.5 TFL and six sacks.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pounder is a rangy off-ball linebacker at the high school level, but says he's confident Texas Tech inside linebacker coach Josh Bookbinder can develop him in the middle of the field. Texas Tech has one of the best linebacker rooms in the Big 12 with reigning Defensive Freshman of the Year Ben Roberts and redshirt junior Jacob Rodriguez.

“The way coach Book talks to me, the way he shows me stuff - I know he can teach me,” Burns said at the Texas State 7-on-7 tournament.

Burns attended Texas Tech's spring game and described Lubbock as one of the best visits he went on. It was there that head coach Joey McGuire won his commitment.

“I love Coach McGuire, how he acts, the way he moves his players around, how everyone’s happy there,” Burns said.

This season at Cypress Falls, Burns will step into a leadership role for a program losing roughly 40 lettermen. While he'll celebrate his commitment, this is only half the goal.

“I don’t just want to make it," Burns said on the 'Talk That Sports' podcast. "I want to be the best at what I’m doing.”
