Baylor fans still love Heisman-winning quarterback Robert Griffin III. Over a decade later, they may be cheering for EGIII.

Coppell quarterback Edward Griffin (the third) has experienced a rapid recruiting rise this offseason. A first-year Varsity player in 2023, Griffin earned District 6-6A Unanimous MVP after passing for over 3,170 yards, 41 touchdowns and three interceptions. But at the conclusion of Griffin's breakout season, in which Coppell won its first playoff game since 2017, the signal caller still didn't have an offer.

"He's special," Coppell head coach Antonio Wiley said after the team's playoff victory over Denton Guyer, "Colleges are missing out on that kid."

UTSA, North Texas and UTEP granted scholarships in the winter. Baylor extended Griffin his first Power Four opportunity on May 10. New offensive coordinator Jake Spavital has an eye for quarterbacks, and he's offered just two (Griffin and Dickinson's Mason Peterson) since joining the staff in November 2023. Spavital has mentored NFL players like Heisman winner Johnny Manziel, NCAA all-time leading passer Case Keenum and No.1-overall draft selection Kyler Murray. 

“He’s had success everywhere with his offense," Griffin said. "He develops quarterbacks very well and they have success and he moves them onto the league.”

The offer was enticing, and Griffin was sold after watching film with Spavital. Griffin prides himself on accuracy and decision-making, and Spavital showed him there was always a receiver open.

The film room is the best way a coach can connect with Griffin. He grew up idolizing Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, watching NFL Network's "A Football Life" and ESPN's "E:60" series on his favorite quarterbacks. He saw the work the legends put in off the field and now imitates them. Wiley said Griffin watches film four times a week with offensive coordinator Heath Naragon.

"The thing that separates him is his ability to prepare," Wiley said. "In my opinion, he's one of the best in the state, if not the best."

Griffin took his official visit last weekend and will make the short trip down to Waco the next two weekends to meet all the Class of 2025 commits. 

"I'm really excited for this class," Griffin said. "I think it's going to be special."
