No team in the short history of Texas State as an FBS program enters a year with more excitement and expectations than the Bobcats in 2024. They won eight games and reached their first bowl game in G.J. Kinne’s first season in charge. Next up is competing for a conference championship in a Sun Belt Conference that is suddenly open for business thanks to coaching changes at James Madison and Troy. The non-conference schedule includes marquee home games against UTSA and Arizona State.

TEXAS STATE BOBCATS

2023 record: 8-5
2024 record prediction: 9-3

BIGGEST GAME – vs. UTSA on Sept. 7

If not for Texas and Texas A&M rekindling a lost rivalry in the SEC, the contest between Texas State and UTSA in Week 2 might be the most anticipated intrastate rivalry in the Lone Star State in 2024. Texas State is 0-5 against the Roadrunners, but the 2024 squad might be the best equipped to end the streak. The Bobcats added the Sun Belt Conference MVP at quarterback in Jordan McCloud while UTSA must replace Frank Harris at quarterback. If not now, then when for Texas State?

TRAP GAME – at Sam Houston on Sept. 28

Texas State plays its first three games in San Marcos. The first road trip of the season is at NRG Stadium against Sam Houston. On paper, that’s a win for the Bobcats but Sam Houston proved it can hang with anyone in Year 1 as an FBS program, even if the record doesn’t illustrate it. That’s because the Bearkats lost five conference games by one-possession, including twice in overtime. Texas State heads to Troy for a midweek clash with Sun Belt title game implications a few days after the Sam Houston contest.

UPSET ALERT – vs. Arizona State on Sept. 12

Texas State knocked off a Big 12 squad in non-conference play last season and the Bobcats hope to repeat the trick in a Week 3 home game against an Arizona State team that’s predicted to finish towards the bottom of the new-look Big 12 conference in 2024. That gives Texas State a real chance to pull the upset on national television.
