SMU announced Monday they have reached a multiyear extension with head coach Rhet Lashlee ahead of the program's move to the ACC in 2024.

Contract details were not immediately available, but On3's Billy Embody reported the deal includes a raise that puts Lashlee on par with other coaches in the ACC.

Lashlee is currently in his second season as SMU's head coach and has guided the Mustangs to a 10–2 record this year, the program's second 10-win season since 1985, and a trip to the American Athletic Conference Championship Game this upcoming Saturday. SMU has the AAC's top-ranked scoring defense and the No.4-ranked scoring offense in the nation. They've ripped off eight-consecutive wins in conference play. 

"This extension is well-deserved and there's no question about the commitment and dedication that he has shown to SMU," SMU athletic director Rick Hart said. "As we enter the ACC, there is no one we'd rather have leading our program than Rhett."

Lashlee was the offensive coordinator under Sonny Dykes in 2019 when SMU last won 10 games. The program raised $100 million in seven days after announcing its move to the ACC. Now, they've locked in the coach to lead them.

"We believe that we are building on the Hilltop and we are excited to finish this season with a chance to compete for the conference championship in the American," Lashlee said. "We're humbled to be leading our program into the ACC in 2024 and beyond."
