Lamar Director of Athletics Jeff O’Malley named Peter Rossomando its next head coach on Saturday. Rossomando spent the last two years as offensive line coach at Charlotte. He was named the 49ers interim head coach for the final four games this year.
Rossomando brings head coaching experience to Beaumont. He led Central Connecticut State to its first appearance in the FCS playoffs in program history in 2017 and was named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award given to the top coach in FCS.
Before CCSU, Rossomando was head coach at NCAA Division II New Haven. He led the Chargers to a 42-13 overall record, including two conference titles and two appearances in the Division II playoffs. Rossomando was named Division II Coach of the Year in 2012 after leading the Chargers to a 10-1 record.
Rossomando has also spent time as offensive line coach at Rutgers and Vanderbilt.
"We could not be more excited to have Pete as our next head coach," O’Malley said in a press release. "After a thorough national search, Pete's name rose to the top of a very impressive list of candidates. In addition to an impressive résumé, Pete has created a strong reputation centered around building programs into championship contenders at both the NCAA Division II and FCS levels. I believe he is the perfect fit for Lamar University at this time, and I look forward to the future of the program under his direction.”
"First, I would like to thank University President Dr. Jaime Taylor and Director of Athletics Jeff O'Malley for this opportunity," Rossomando said. "I could tell they had a strong commitment toward football, and the facilities at Lamar blew me away. The opportunity to recruit and coach in the state of Texas is very exciting.
"Our fans can expect a team that will be exciting on offense, play great special teams and really fly to the ball on defense. I'm ecstatic about getting to Beaumont, engaging our fans and the community, and being the Cardinals' next head coach.”
