Dave Campbell’s Texas Football has confirmed that Justin Carrigan will step down as head football coach at UT Permian Basin following seven years with the Falcons.
Carrigan was hired as the program’s first head coach in early 2015 and departs with a 26-45 overall record, including a 5-6 record in 2022. The Falcons were close to finishing towards the top of the Lone Star Conference this season, but last-minute losses to West Texas A&M (28-27), Texas A&M-Kingsville (13-10), and Midwestern State (24-23) derailed what would've been another historic season for the Falcons.
This year was the first season since beginning the football program that Carrigan and his staff were fully funded with 36 scholarships. For most of his tenure, Carrigan had only 12 scholarships available. The program played for most of its first seven years without a locker room and other facilities until the D. Kirk Edwards Family Human Performance Center was completed in the Fall of 2020.
Despite the challenges, the UTPB football program continued to succeed on the field under Carrigan and won five games each of its last three seasons. The Falcons set the program record for most Lone Star Conference wins in the last two years and earned an invite to the Fun Town RV Heritage Bowl in 2021.
