Pflugerville ISD named new head coaches at Weiss High School and Connally High School over the weekend, putting an end to a very efficient hiring process at two of the district’s four football programs.

Weiss, which is the district’s only 6A program at this time, came open in early December with the resignation of Steve Van Meter, who came out retirement to lead the Wolves program for three seasons. Offensive coordinator Vernon Hughes, a well thought of young assistant in Central Texas, was named to his first head coaching job on Tuesday. Hughes has spent time as an assistant at La Grange, Hutto, Del Valle and Pflugerville Weiss.

Long struggling Connally High School opened up earlier this offseason when Jason Cecil resigned his post after nine seasons leading the Cougars. Lake Travis assistant coach and former Del Valle head coach Charles Burton was named the next head coach at Pflugerville Connally on Friday morning.

Burton spent eight seasons as head coach at Del Valle and prior to that he was an assistant at Fort Bend Dulles. “These last two seasons were great at Lake Travis, I’m really excited to get going and bring some new energy at Connally, I’m looking forward to getting to work,” Coach Burton told DCTF over the weekend.

Pflugerville ISD athletic director Mike McEachern confirmed to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football on Monday that PfISD interviewed six candidates for each position, with the Weiss candidates interviewing last Monday and the Connally candidates interviewing on Tuesday.
