Stepp's 4A DII Region I Picks: District Projections and Playoff Outlook

It’s a two-horse race out in West Texas as Seminole and Greenwood expect to once again battle it out for the district title. Both teams are fresh off winning 10 games a year ago and return a similar amount of experience, but I’m giving the edge to Seminole on the strength of depth in their senior class. Monahans, despite the youth on offense, gets the edge for the three-seed, while Snyder, in Year 2 under Anthony Gonzales, is a surprise pick for the final playoff spot, holding off Fort Stockton and new head coach DJ Howell.

Estacado took home the district title in 2-4A Division II last year and the Matadors will be in the mix once again. However, Lubbock Liberty looks to be a fast riser in their second season as every player from last year’s team is back. The Patriots only won two games last year, but they had three losses by six points or less and were competitive in district play. Perryton expects to be much-improved under second-year head coach Josh Hernandez, while Levelland and Borger will be in the playoff mix, as well.

Brock and Graham dominated the region a year ago with Graham winning the regular season game and Brock stunning the Steers in the fourth round of the playoffs. Both teams suffered heavy losses due to graduation, but pedigree is high with these two so expect them to be right in the mix once again in 2025. Eagle Mountain was a surprise playoff team a year ago and returns all 22 starters. The Knights should be vastly improved, but Mineral Wells will be in contention, as well.

Glen Rose, which won the region in 2022 and 2023, should again be the team to beat in 4-4A Division II. But the gap has closed as Benbrook, fresh off its best season in school history, has hopes of another big run. Godley improved at the end of Year 1 under Danny Dudgeon, and with 15 starters back, the Wildcats expect to be a sleeper in Region I.
