In a bombshell announcement on Monday, Gunter athletic director and head football coach Jake Fieszel confirmed via text message to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football and the Sherman Herald-Democrat that he is resigning his position due to a personal matter.
"After much thought and due to family considerations, I have decided to resign as athletic director and head football coach at Gunter ISD, effective at the end of my contract. This will give Gunter ISD the flexibility to move forward in a way that best serves the district," Fieszel said.
Fieszel led the Tigers to unprecedented heights, winning five state championships — including a remarkable three-peat from 2022 to 2024 — during his 18 seasons at the helm. He compiled an extraordinary 224–31 overall record while overseeing Gunter’s athletic department.
While Fieszel presided over success across all sports at Gunter, the football program became a powerhouse under his leadership. The Tigers claimed 15 district championships in 18 seasons, won five state titles, reached two additional title games, and made nine consecutive state semifinal appearances.
Given the late timing of the opening and the program’s sustained dominance, it would make sense for Gunter ISD to promote from within and reward the current coaching staff. However, because Gunter is a 3A program not participating in spring football, there’s also a possibility the job will be posted — and if it is, it will draw major interest from candidates both in Texas and beyond.
