Waco ISD made it official on Tuesday by promoting Waco University defensive coordinator Charles Foster to head coach of the Trojans.

Foster had been serving as the Trojans interim head coach since mid-March after the departure of former head coach Kaeron Johnson, who left to take a position on staff at Baylor University.

Foster, a native of Cameron and graduate of Cameron Yoe, played collegiately at the University of Houston before beginning his coaching journey as a defensive line coach at Nacogdoches, where he spent four seasons on staff.

The new Waco University head coach has also spent time as an assistant coach at Bellville, Galena Park, Copperas Cove and Bryan before being named Waco University defensive coordinator in 2023 under new head coach Kaeron Johnson.

“I actually met Coach Johnson when I was in high school," said Foster, who oversaw a defense that from 2021-2023 was among the state’s most improved. "We competed against each other at the state track meet in the discuss when he was at Cuero. It was an honor to coach with him and he’s laid an incredible foundation here in South Waco."

Foster says the announcement is a dream come true, but it’s business as usual for his guys on the team going forward.

“Being officially named head coach, it’s something I dreamed of when I got into coaching," he said. "I was patient and I worked for a lot of great coaches who taught me a lot. I waited for my time to come and I’m honored and grateful, but the work doesn’t stop our goals are the same to win a district title.

“I really appreciate the South Waco community. They were behind me and the kids have been resilient and working hard during the transition. We’ve had very little staff turnover. We’ll get going on summer strength and conditioning and play in a couple of SQTs. Offensively, we want to be ‘all gas, no breaks’ and on defense we are going to swarm to the football and be physical.”

Waco University, who finished 7-4 a year ago, will open their 2025 season on the road as they visit Class 6A Keller Central.
