After several weeks of questions and a shroud of uncertainty around the athletic program at Mason High School, it appears Mason ISD is moving on from athletic director/head football coach Michael McLeod as the combined job was posted Monday morning on the Mason ISD website.

In late March, Mason posted the athletic director job with possible head football coach attached, which confirmed the rumors that something was amiss in the Mason ISD athletic department after weeks of rumblings of possible changes.

McLeod, a Mason High alum and long-time assistant coach, was promoted to athletic director/head football coach in early 2019 replacing Kade Burns who was promoted to the principal at Mason High School.

In six seasons, McLeod has posted an impressive 58-16 overall record, including an 11-2 mark in 2024. Mason’s been among the most consistent winners in Region IV and although it hasn't had the playoff success it had in the 2010s under Burns, the decision to move on from Coach McLeod is surprising considering the overall success in the athletic program top to bottom. Mason has won a pair of Lone Star Cups during McLeod’s tenure among other things.

It is interesting that as of this time the job is only posted on the Mason ISD website and not yet on any statewide job boards like THSCA. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football will continue to monitor the situation as regardless of what direction the district goes, one of the state’s most high-profile 2A jobs is now officially open.
