Bishop CISD on Saturday named Ingleside offensive coordinator David McHugh as the next head football coach at Bishop High School replacing Rigo Morales who stepped down last month to become the new head coach at 6A Edinburg North.
McHugh has spent the past three seasons as the offensive coordinator at his alma mater Ingleside, in 2023 his offensive unit was among the best in the state as the Mustangs posted an impressive 11-2 overall record.
“Having seen the kids from Bishop quite often in multiple sports, I noticed they always have talented kids who work hard and compete like no other,” said McHugh.
Prior to his time in Ingleside, McHugh spent two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Taft, he spent one season as a WR Coach at Mathis and one season as the WR Coach/Passing Game Coordinator at San Antonio TMI.
Coach McHugh who played college football at McMurry University in Abilene, where he earned his bachelor's degree before jumping into the coaching profession. He also operates TWINS Passing Academy, a summer one-day camp in the Coastal Bend to assist local players with exposure on the recruiting trail. McHugh gets high school coaches from across the state to volunteer their time to assist with the operation of the camp.
“Coach Morales did a great job, the kids are used to winning, you watch tape and you see they were a well-coached football team on both sides of the ball. I feel like Bishop is ready to break out and do great things, I’m really fortunate that I’m taking over a program in such good shape for my first head coaching job,” said the new Bishop head coach.
It's been a big off-season for the McHugh family as David’s twin brother Matt McHugh, who was the offensive coordinator at Crowley High School in DFW was recently named Director of Recruiting at the University of North Texas. Coach McHugh’s wife, Ashley McHugh in her first season as the head girls basketball coach at Sinton led the Lady Pirates to the third round of the playoffs for first time since 1995.
McHugh, who plans to meet his new team on Monday said the interview process was efficient and he walked away very impressed with Bishop CISD. “The administration has passion and they really want the football program to be successful, there’s some exciting facility updates on the horizon, the way the superintendent and athletic director spoke about the future and vision made me ready to be a Bishop Badger and I can’t wait to get started,” said McHugh.
