After weeks of rumors the Edna ISD school board announced on Monday night that athletic director/head football coach Jimmie Mitchell’s request for reassignment was granted, leaving one of the more attractive jobs in Class 3A-Division I vacant. The news was first reported by Mike Forman of the Victoria Advocate.
Mitchell, who has led the Cowboys to three consecutive state semifinal appearances at the 3A-Division I level had his contract non-renewed by the EISD board during the February board meeting. After that non-renewal, Mitchell informed the board of his request for reassignment.
Edna in 2024 posted a 14-1 record which ties their 1965 and 1991 teams as the best single season record in school history. During Mitchell’s tenure in Edna which started in 2020, the Cowboys have an impressive 54-15 record.
Mitchell in 23 seasons as a head coach has a 173-101 record with stops at Sinton, Sealy, Beeville Jones, Manor and Edna. Mitchell was an assistant coach also on Sinton’s 2001 state runner-up squad.
Multiple sources close to Coach Mitchell have confirmed he’s not done coaching and will be actively pursuing a new coaching position during this off-season cycle.
There’s no word as of yet on when Edna will post the opening for the AD/HFC, but considering their recent track record of success there will be plenty of candidates who apply.
