Boerne ISD has announced the promotion of defensive coordinator Brett Sawyer to head coach of the Greyhounds.
Sawyer replaces Che Hendrix, who departed earlier this month to take a job on staff at the University of Arkansas.
Sawyer has spent the past seven seasons as the Greyhounds defensive coordinator and has played a huge part in Boerne’s success in recent years as they played for a 4A Division I state title in 2022 and advanced to the 5A Division II state semifinals in 2024.
Sawyer does have head coaching experience posting a 29-26 record in five seasons. He led Sweeny from 2010-2012, taking the Bulldogs to a regional semifinal appearance in 2011. He then led Baytown Sterling for two seasons, posting a 10-10 record in 2016 and 2017.
It's not much of a surprise that Boerne went the internal route considering the program's recent success and that goes along with many of the sources we were hearing from in relation to this job. Sawyer inherits a team that posted an 11-4 mark in 2024, but graduates a strong senior class and must deal with an out of state transfer of their star quarterback, all while playing in a difficult District 13-5A Division II that features Alamo Heights, Victoria West and Kerrville Tivy, who is also looking for a head coach.
