London ISD on Wednesday evening named Andy Smith as the Pirates' next athletic director/head football coach at London High School. Smith spent 2024 as Alpine’s athletic director/head football coach and replaces Robbie Moreno, who started London’s football program and posted a 77-43 record in eleven seasons of varsity football.
Smith, in two seasons at the helm in Alpine, posted a 10-13 overall record, leading the Bucks to an area-round playoff appearance in 2023 and followed that up with a playoff appearance in 2024 with a relatively young team.
Before coming to Alpine, Smith had two stints at Gregory-Portland, where he served as OC and co-offensive coordinator. He was previously an offensive coordinator for four seasons at Corpus Christi King, spent four seasons as New Caney’s offensive coordinator, was a position coach at Athens, and spent time as a graduate assistant at UTEP, where he also played collegiately.
“The opportunity to come home to the Coastal Bend, we’ve been there ten years, was just too good to pass up. London is an amazing school that competes for the Lone Star Cup, the administration has a great vision what academics and athletics can do for kids, great opportunity,” said Coach Smith.
“I can’t say enough about Alpine ISD administration, specifically Dr. (Michelle) Rhinehart (Alpine ISD Superintendent) to give me a chance to become an AD/HFC for the first time. The kids at Alpine are the best I’ve ever worked with, this is an incredibly supportive community and a special place, our superintendent gets it and this is a really good job,” replied Smith when reflecting on his time in Alpine.
London ISD, which is located just outside of Corpus Christi, is currently experiencing rapid growth as they are currently in Class 3A-Division I and are likely moving up to Class 4A-Division II in the 2026 UIL Realignment. Coach Smith says he’s ready to begin building relationships and getting their culture instilled during the remainder of the off-season.
