McAllen ISD on Friday afternoon named Weslaco East offensive coordinator and former Texas A&M star WR Jamaar Taylor as the next head football coach at McAllen Rowe High School. Taylor replaces Robert Flores who led the Warriors for nine seasons.

Taylor is best known for his time playing collegiately at Texas A&M where he was a three-year starter for the Aggies, after finishing his playing career in College Station in 2003, Taylor was a sixth round draft pick for the New York Giants.

After a brief stint in the NFL Taylor returned to the Rio Grande Valley where he began his coaching career, he’s best known for a six-year stint as the offensive coordinator at RGV powerhouse Edinburg Vela from 2018-2023. Taylor spent 2024 at Weslaco East and has spent time as an assistant at PSJA, Mission Veterans Memorial and La Joya.

“McAllen is the hub of the Valley so that was attractive to start, Nikki Rowe High has tons of potential, there’s plenty of parental participation and great kids, having gone against them as an opposing coach I always noticed they had good size and thought it’d be a fit for me if the job ever opened up,” said Taylor.

Coach Taylor, who plans on starting full-time Monday says communication with the kids and community will be key, “Time is of the essence, so I need to get in and meet with the kids and parents, introduce myself and set expectations, then we’ll begin to evaluate things, the athletes themselves and the staff that’s in place. It’s been a long road, grateful for the opportunity to lead this program, there was a great panel in the interview process and I was so impressed with the administration in McAllen ISD and on campus, I just can’t wait to get started,” said the new McAllen Rowe head coach who takes over a team that went 3-7 in 2024.
