The 2024 non-FBS season was a success for many Texas programs. Eleven teams appeared in the postseason. UIW won its third Southland Conference title in the last four years and defeated Villanova in the second round before making a run to the FCS quarterfinals. Mary Hardin-Baylor claimed its only win in three tries against rival Hardin-Simmons when it mattered most this season on its way to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals.
Many teams made program history, highlighted by Abilene Christian, which earned the program’s first conference title since transitioning to NCAA Division I when the Wildcats defeated Tarleton to claim the United Athletic Conference title. They won the program’s first FCS playoff game over Northern Arizona after the defense pitched a shutout.
Tarleton also made program history by earning an at-large selection into the FCS playoffs and defeating Drake in its first FCS playoff game in the program’s first season of playoff eligibility as a DI institution.
Angelo State won the Lone Star Conference title outright for the second time in the last three seasons and earned a bid to the NCAA Division II playoffs. UTPB made its second consecutive postseason appearance for the first time in program history and nearly defeated Central Missouri in the Heritage Bowl powered by Riot.
Trinity surprised many pundits by earning a share of its fourth consecutive Southern Athletic Association championship and an at-large bid to the DIII playoffs. Caden Bosanko led Texas Lutheran to its first postseason appearance since 2014 and a share of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title.
Texas Wesleyan made program history by earning its first outright Sooner Athletic Conference championship and making its first appearance in the NAIA playoffs since resurrecting the program in 2017. Navarro completed an impressive season by winning the Southwestern Junior College Football Conference title before defeating Coffeyville to claim the CHAMPS Heart of Texas Bowl.
This success made selecting the 2024 Dave Campbell’s Texas Football All-Texas Non-FBS team challenging. This year’s team includes 43 players from 23 different schools. UIW, ACU, and Angelo State led the way with five selections each. HSU placed four players on the team, while Tarleton, Texas Wesleyan, Navarro, McMurry, and Trinity each had two players selected.
Other teams represented include East Texas A&M, Texas College, TLU, Wayland Baptist, Trinity Valley, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Nelson, Blinn, UTPB, UMHB, Tyler, Texas Southern, Kilgore, and Stephen F. Austin. Fifteen players are from FCS schools, seven are DII athletes, 10 are DIII players, five are from NAIA institutions, and six played NJCAA this year.
