Gentry, Stanaland lead Jayton to first state title since 1980s

ARLINGTON -- Back when Jayton High School honored its 1984 state championship team before a regular season game against Valley, head coach Josh Stanaland had his boys turn around and look at the group of legends standing on the track. Then, he talked about legacy.

Stanaland knew early in the season his group had the chance to do what those men did back in the 1984 and '85 seasons, win a state championship and end the program's 39-year drought. In fact, others did too. Trey Richey, a Jayton alum and the only man to ever win a six-man state championship as both a player and coach, gave Stanaland a word of advice - don't get in the way.

In the bowels of AT&T Stadium after a 54-8 win over Oakwood in the Class 1A Division II State Championship, Richey had another message for the head coach.

"We brought another one back to Jayton," Richey told him.

But the magnitude of their accomplishment hadn't set in for Stanaland and his players because it happened so fast.

Defensive MVP Colt Gentry returned a fumble 73 yads for a touchdown to open up a 16-0 lead with five minutes left in the first quarter, and Jayton never looked back. Quarterback Sean Stanaland, the head coaches' nephew and son of assistant coach John Stanaland, combined with junior Bode Ham for seven touchdowns.

The game was over at halftime due to the 45-point mercy rules, Jayton's 14th of 15 total games decided in that fashion.

"When the lights are the brightest, we're always at our best," Sean said.

The game might be over after a half, but Stanaland will live in this moment for a long time.

"This is something I always dreamed about as a kid growing up in Jayton," Stanaland said. "I always said, 'If I could get there one time.'"

His team did. And they won.
