Galena Park North Shore (13-0) vs Humble Atascocita (12-1), 2 p.m. Saturday at Houston’s Thorne Stadium:
North Shore’s won the last nine meetings in this series, including a 27-23 thriller during Week 9 in which Atascocita dominated for 47 of the 48 minutes. Can the Eagles put that heartbreak behind them and finally get over the hump in front of what is expected to be a standing room only crowd at newly remodeled Thorne Stadium.
Last week North Shore raced out to a 21-0 lead on Katy, but then a couple of turnovers later, the Mustangs found themselves in a fight. NSHS finally pulled away down the stretch for a 42-28 win. QB Kaleb Bailey threw for 281 yards and five touchdowns, spreading the ball around to five different receivers. Ohio State DB commit Devin Sanchez made his presence known with an interception, a fumble recovery and a long kick return as well for the Mustangs.
Atascocita got tested last week but the Eagles survived against unbeaten Fulshear, 47-42. Oklahoma RB commit Tory Blaylock ran for 155 yards and five scores and the Atascocita defense found a way late to slow down a very difficult offensive scheme.
The key in this game will be Atascocita’s defense. The Eagles found a way to contain the North Shore offense in the first game. If they can do it again, they may have enough to pull the upset.
North Shore’s penchant for turnovers is a major concern going into this one. Eventually all streaks must end and this may be the time.
