COLLEGE STATION - - Hamshire-Fannett brought home its first Texas 7-on-7 State Tournament title with an 18-0 shutout over surprising Dumas in the Division II bracket on Friday.
“It feels great to win the championship," QB Ty Bryson said. "We’ve worked really hard all summer to get it done. We had a big sense of urgency on offense with the shortened games. We wanted to come out quick, but our defense was the MVP in the championship. Pitching a shutout in 7-on-7 is amazing."
The Longhorns, who are a regular at this tournament, actually started the day with a loss as they wrapped up pool play falling to an outstanding Kilgore squad, 18-12, in overtime. Hamshire-Fannett rattled off five straight wins to bring the title home, including getting revenge over Kilgore in another close game in the semifinals, 14-6.
Hamshire-Fannett opened the title game by forcing a three-and-out and then jumped out to a 6-0 lead as Bryson connected with Braxton Starnes for a 26-yard touchdown.
Due to the condensed schedule after yesterday’s rains, the games in Division II/Division III were only w0 minutes long, so after a pair of turnover on downs Hamshire-Fannett led just 6-0 at the half.
The ‘Horns took over on the first drive of the second half and immediately all but put the game out of reach as Bryson and Starnes connected for a 45-yard touchdown pass to make it 12-0. Hamshire-Fannett finished the game off with a touchdown connection from Bryson to speedy WR Chris Augustine, who tormented defenses all day with the deep ball.
Dumas went 0-3 in pool play before rattling off four straight upset wins over Brookshire Royal, Graham, Robinson and two-time defending champion before falling in the title game.
