The dust has (mostly) settled from the spring transfer portal and we’re less than 100 days until kickoff of the 2024 season. As the calendar turns to June, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football takes stock at each position room at the 13 FBS programs to provide a feel for how each stack up relative to conference strength. We provide explanations for our top five and then list 6-13 below starting with the skill position room, which includes wide receiver and tight end.
WIDE RECEIVER ROOMS
1. TEXAS LONGHORNS
The players: WR Isaiah Bond (Jr.), WR Matthew Golden (Jr.), WR Silas Bolden (Jr.), TE Amari Niblack (Jr.), WR Johntay Cook II (Soph.), WR Ryan Wingo (Fr.), TE Gunnar Helm (Sr.)
The outlook: The Longhorns lost Xavier Worthy, Adonai Mitchell, JT Sanders, and Jordan Whittington and might not miss a beat. That’s because Steve Sarkisian & Co. hauled in a talented group of wide receivers and tight ends through the portal with Bond and Niblack from Alabama, as well as Golden (Houston) and Bolden (Oregon State). Cook was a five-star prospect in 2023 and Wingo was in 2024.
2. TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS
The players: WR Josh Kelly (Sr.), WR Caleb Douglas (Jr.), TE Mason Tharp (Sr.), WR Coy Eakin (Soph.), WR Micah Hudson (Fr.), TE Jalin Conyers (Sr.), WR Drae McCray (Sr.)
The outlook: Texas wasn’t the only team to improve through a line change at wide receiver and tight end. Kelly, a Washington State transfer, could be a breakout star in the Big 12 in Zach Kittley’s offense. Douglas and Conyers were also great adds through the transfer portal. The most exciting new face is true freshman Micah Hudson, however. The highest-rated signee in Texas Tech history missed the spring. The tight end room is one of the best in America.
3. TCU HORNED FROGS
The players: WR Savion Williams (Sr.), TE Drake Dabney (Sr.), WR Eric McAlister (Jr.), WR J.P. Richardson (Sr.), WR Dylan Wright (Sr.), WR Blake Nowell (Sr.), WR Major Everhart (Soph.)
The outlook: Williams is a specimen who offensive coordinator Kendal Briles wants to touch the ball at least eight times a game. Williams proved in the Texas game last year that he’s as good as it gets when he’s targeted. Dabney was one of the more underrated pickups of the offseason because the former Baylor standout will replace Jared Wiley’s production at tight end. The coaching staff loves Boise State transfer McAlister. The depth is also there with Nowell, Everhart, and others.
4. SMU MUSTANGS
The players: TE RJ Maryland (Jr.), WR Jake Bailey (Sr.), WR Key’Shawn Smith (Sr.) WR Romello Brinson (Sr.), WR Jordan Hudson (Jr.), WR Moochie Dixon (Sr.), WR Roderick Daniels (Sr.)
The outlook: SMU doesn’t have a superstar like Rashee Rice at wide receiver anymore, but a talented and deep unit returns its top seven receivers from last year, including star tight end Maryland. The move up to ACC will test the talents of these players, but most played P5 football before transferring to the Hilltop.
5. TEXAS A&M AGGIES
The players: WR Noah Thomas (Jr.), WR Jahdae Walker (Sr.), WR Moose Muhammad III (Sr.), TE Donovan Green (Soph.), TE Garrett Miller (Sr.), WR Cyrus Allen (Jr.), WR Micah Tease (Soph.), TE Tre Watson (Sr.)
The outlook: Depth is a concern, especially when Jabre Barber was lost in the spring for an undisclosed period, but the top end talent at wide receiver is proven. Health and consistency are the only question marks for players such as Walker, Thomas, and Muhammad. Same for tight end Green, who was quarterback Conner Weigman’s favorite target when they were both freshmen in 2022. The Aggies improved the tight end room with Miller and Watson.
BEST OF THE REST
6. UTSA ROADRUNNERS
A healthy JT Clark bolsters a Roadrunner claim to a Top 5 spot on the list. Oscar Cardenas is Mr. Clutch at tight end. The new crop of UTSA receivers are lightning quick and dangerous after the catch.
7. BAYLOR BEARS
The arrival of Jake Spavital should allow players such as Monaray Baldwin and Ketron Jackson Jr. to flourish.
8. TEXAS STATE BOBCATS
Joey Hobert is the real deal. He'll need unproven faces around him to step up.
9. NORTH TEXAS MEAN GREEN
Damon Ward becomes WR1 in an offense that always manages to put up big numbers.
10. HOUSTON COUGARS
The Cougars lost most of its receiver production through the portal, including Matthew Golden and Sam Brown.
11. RICE OWLS
Replacing Luke McCaffrey is the biggest concern for the Rice offense.
12. SAM HOUSTON BEARKATS
Noah Smith emerged last season. A healthy Ife Adeyi and Qua'Vez Humphreys makes the unit dangerous.
13. UTEP MINERS
The Miners brought in four wide receiver transfers from Austin Peay.
