The nation has waited for them to meet on the football field. Before that, they meet on the cover of Dave Campbell's Texas Football.
Dave Campbell’s Texas Football revealed the cover of its 2024 summer edition on Monday — the 65th annual “Bible of Texas Football” — featuring Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers and Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman.
With the iconic rivals set to square off for the first time after a 12-year hiatus, Ewers and Weigman face off on the cover under the headline "RIVALRY REBORN." Ewers is the first Longhorns quarterback since 2019 (Sam Ehlinger) to appear on the cover of the magazine, while Weigman is the first Aggies quarterback since 2013 (Johnny Manziel) to grace the cover. It's the first time the Aggies and Longhorns have appeared on the cover together since 2015's illustration imploring the two to revive their rivalry, and the first time they've been photographed together for the cover since Stephen McGee and Colt McCoy joined TCU's Tommy Blake on the 2007 cover.
The image was shot by San Antonio-based photographer Aaron Meullion, shooting his first summer cover.
"There is nothing quite like figuring out the cover of Dave Campbell's Texas Football," managing editor Greg Tepper said. "It's a unique challenge because it will live in history forever, so it's important that we always remember our goal: to capture the most compelling story in the state that year. And with the Aggies and Longhorns teeing it up for the first time in more than a decade, reviving their iconic rivalry that has long shaped what football means in this state, it feels right to put their superstar quarterbacks on the cover together."
For the ninth consecutive year, the magazine features a second “gatefold” cover, and this one's a family affair: legendary Katy coach Gary Joseph and his son, Port Neches-Groves coach Jeff Joseph, grace the secondary cover after PNG's remarkable title win made them just the third father-son duo in Texas high school football history to win state championships. The father and son appear under the headline of "FAMILY BUSINESS: Gary and Jeff Joseph on top of Texas." The image was shot by Katy-based photographer Erik Williams, shooting his first summer cover.
"How can you not love a father-sun story, especially in Texas high school football?" Tepper said. "Frankly, it's been a long time coming for us to get Katy's iconic Gary Joseph on our cover, and when Jeff Joseph led the football-crazy Port Neches-Groves community to a state championship, the pieces fell into perfect place to create another iconic gatefold cover."
