The same Red River Rivalry, but with an SEC twist.
The first rendition between Texas and Oklahoma in their new conference will kick off at 2:30 p.m. CT, away from the 11:00 a.m. time slot for the second time in 14 seasons. Brett McMurphy of the Action Network was the first to report.
While the game has become synonymous with a morning kickoff, the tradition is not as set in stone as recency bias makes believe. From 1950-72, every game started between 2:00-3:20 p.m. The rivalry was only played once at noon from 1982-1998. In fact, the game has only kicked off at 11:00 a.m. with regularity since 2008.
The SEC's marquee games are held in the mid-afternoon, whereas the other conferences usually opt for a noon or night kick.
A correction was made on May 30: The article originally stated this was the first afternoon kickoff in 15 seasons. There have actually been two afternoon kicks in the past 14 seasons. DCTF regrets this error.
