Multiple sources have confirmed to Dave Campbell's Texas Football that UT Permian Basin will soon begin to search for a new athletic director. Vice President for Athletics Todd Dooley will exit to pursue opportunities outside collegiate athletics. An announcement of his departure is expected to be released Wednesday.
The Falcons athletics department experienced unprecedented success during the 2023-2024 school year. UTPB had two programs, football and men’s tennis, win their first Lone Star Conference title in program history. Seven programs appeared in the NCAA Division II playoffs this year, with men’s tennis reaching the Sweet 16.
UTPB’s athletic department experienced academic success on top of its athletic achievements under Dooley’s guidance. 13 of the Falcons' 14 teams achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
Multiple sources indicate former UTPB athletic director Scott Farmer will serve as interim athletic director during the search. A 30-year veteran in intercollegiate athletics, Farmer was instrumental in completing the D. Kirk Edwards Family Human Performance Center, establishing the Champions Fund, and increasing funding for athletic scholarships during his tenure with the Falcons.
Farmer will temporarily inhabit the Director of Athletics office dedicated to him and his wife, Jackie. Farmer retired at the end of 2020 and was succeeded by Dooley, who becomes the second LSC athletic director to depart this year after Michael McBroom left West Texas A&M for the same position at Stephen F. Austin.
