Orange Grove ISD on Tuesday morning brought one of their own home, as OGHS graduate and current Schertz Clemens head coach Jared Johnston was named the next athletic director/head football coach at Orange Grove High School.
Johnston has led Clemens since 2012, when he posted a 67-62 overall record. His best year came in 2015 when the Buffs posted an 11-3 record and advanced to a regional final.
Prior to becoming the Buffaloes' head coach, Johnston spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at Cibolo Steele, where he started the Knights program under then-head coach Mike Jinks. He also spent one season on staff at San Antonio Burbank.
Although moving from a 6A program in a major city like San Antonio to a 3A program down on the Texas coast may seem like a surprise to some, it's a dream come true for Johnston. "It's a blessing; I graduated from Orange Grove in 1991, and to go back and coach at a place that I truly love is just a blessing and overwhelming," said the new Orange Grove head coach.
"I've been in the school district nineteen years here at SCUCISD, and I wasn't necessarily looking for a job; I haven't looked for a job the entire time I've been here, and when this opportunity came along, I couldn't pass it up. When you are in one place for nearly twenty years, the memories are too many to count; this place will always hold a special place in my heart. It's bittersweet; I'm leaving home to go home. My heart is broken because I'm leaving this place, but I'm also so excited to go home and coach on the same field that I played on," said Johnston.
