Houston's new regime added a familiar face today.
Head coach Willie Fritz is bringing on Wyoming associate head coach Oscar Giles for a third stint as Houston's defensive line coach. Joseph Duarte of the Houston Chronicle was first to report the imminent hiring on February 7.
An All-Southwest Conference selection at Texas as a defensive lineman, Giles previously coached at Houston from 2003-04 and again under then-head coach Tom Herman from 2015-16. The Cougars posted a 22–4 record during those two seasons, and Giles helped recruit the program's first five-star commit in Ed Oliver, who turned in an All-American season in 2016.
Giles has spent 22 of his 25-year coaching career in the state of Texas, most notably with the Longhorns from 2005-13, where they reached two national championships, and again from 2017-20 as part of Herman's staff. He mentored two Big 12 Defensive Linemen of the Year in his second stint (Poona Ford - 2017, Charles Omenihu - 2018).
