Sources have confirmed to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football that Tarleton is close to signing head football coach Todd Whitten to a contract extension. The Texas A&M Board of Regents is scheduled to meet on Thursday with a contract extension for Whitten on the agenda.
Another item on the agenda is approval to execute a contract for the next Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics. Sources have confirmed West Virginia executive deputy athletic director and chief operating officer Steve Uryasz is the top candidate. A contract agreement is expected to quickly follow approval from the board of regents. ESPN’s Pete Thamel first reported the news about Uryasz.
Whitten was named United Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Texans to an 8-3 overall record and a 4-2 record in Tarleton’s final season of transition to FCS. Whitten guided Tarleton to the third-best winning percentage among all reclassifying schools since 2004 (.604). Sources were unable to share the terms of the contract in order to avoid jeopardizing ongoing negotiations.
Uryasz is no stranger to Texas, having spent over 17 years in an administrative role within the Texas Tech athletic department. He served the last seven years with West Virginia and was most recently deputy athletic director and chief operating officer. Uryasz is replacing long-time athletic director Lonn Reisman, retiring at the end of the 2023-2024 school year following 24 years at Tarleton.
