Texas A&M observers knew the Wrecking Crew defense needed to overhaul the secondary, and specifically the cornerback room. New head coach Mike Elko is wasting little time on that front. The newest edition is Dezz Ricks, a former five-star recruit in the 2023 class who played at IMG Academy. He was the second-ranked cornerback in the country, according to 247Sports composite.
Ricks was a reserve for the Crimson Tide as a true freshman, helping on special teams when necessary. The 6-1, 185-pound cornerback will immediately compete for a starting spot at cornerback for Texas A&M. The Aggies also signed Kansas State’s Will Lee III, UAB’s BJ Mayes, Florida’s Jaydon Hill, and Cal Poly’s Donovan Saunders as transfer cornerbacks.
The Texas A&M defense ranked 37th in total passing last season, allowing 207.4 yards a game. The unit was the top pass defense in America in 2022. The Wrecking Crew allowed 22.1 points per game in 2023. They allowed 15.9 in 2021 – the last year Elko served as defensive coordinator before heading to Duke as a head coach.
