Texas State’s G.J. Kinne is set to make at least a million dollars next year according to the latest contract signed by the coach and school.

The news was first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel who wrote Kinne and Texas State had come together on a five year deal with a million dollar base salary.

Thamel’s report came on Dec. 21, just five days before the Bobcats would earn their first ever bowl win in school history over Rice at the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.

Kinne now becomes the first Bobcat head coach of any sport to make a million dollars per contract year.

Records show Kinne is set to make a base salary of $1,000,000 and the coach will be eligible to increase the guaranteed annual salary by a maximum of $700,000 during the length of his contract.

According to the contract, the buyout for Kinne would be $3,000,000 after the 2024 season and potentially up to $3,500,000 if he were to hit the maximum incentives on the deal.

The contract itself also has certain triggers. For example, if Texas State were to win eight regular season games, Kinne’s contract would be extended by another year and his salary would increase by $100,000. Theres a separate trigger that says if the Bobcats win the Sun Belt Conference Championship Game, Kinne’s annual salary increase by $200,000 and also comes with an additional year-long extension.

However, both of those triggers may only be awarded once during the length of the contract.
The full contract also comes with a guaranteed $50,000 retention bonus for each year of the contract Kinne is employed by Texas State on the deal. That bonus money is capped at $200,000 in 2028.

More good news for the Bobcats: More than $191,000 more dollars will go to hiring and retaining assistant coaches in 2024 with the school’s coaching salary pool. Records show in 2016, then Head Coach Everet Withers had $994,435 to work with. That number would actually decrease by more than $58,000 in his second year and sit at $938,127 in his final year.

When Jake Spavital took the helm for the Bobcats the coaching pool money would rise to $1,229,242 and rise to $1,319,080 in Spavital’s final year with the team. Kinne’s squad this will have $1,667,000 to play with in 2024.
