In a surprise announcement on Wednesday, New Braunfels head coach Glenn Mangold informed his team he would be retiring from public school coaching after leading the Unicorns program for the past decade.

Reports are Mangold, who was 55-50 at New Braunfels, is expected to be named the next head coach at San Antonio Central Catholic.

Mangold and outgoing New Braunfels AD Jim Streety had a history of working together as Mangold was Streety’s offensive coordinator at San Antonio Madison from 2008-2013. When Streety became NBISD athletic director in 2014, Mangold was quickly hired to lead the New Braunfels program.

While at Madison, Mangold was an assistant on two state semifinal teams and in 2021 and 2022 he led the Unicorns to the area round of the playoffs. Mangold also spent time as an assistant coach at Converse Judson, Medina Valley and also was a graduate assistant at the University of Iowa, where he earned his master’s degree after doing his undergrad at Southwest Texas State (now known at Texas State).

Mangold’s departure adds to an offseason of total upheaval in New Braunfels ISD Athletics as Streety is retiring at the end of the school year. Mangold is now departing and NBISD is also looking to hire the first ever head coach at Long Creek High School, which will begin varsity football for the 2026 season in a UIL district.

New Braunfels ISD recently announced the hiring of Richard Mendoza as the district’s new athletic director. Mendoza served as the first ever head coach at San Antonio Veterans Memorial from 2015-2021 and since then has served as the principal at Converse Judson.
