D’Eriq King will be named the next quarterbacks coach at SMU, sources told Dave Campbell’s. The former Manvel High School star served as an offensive analyst for the Mustangs during the 2023 AAC title run. He’ll replace Jonathan Brewer, who is taking the same job at Duke. 

King threw for over 10,000 yards and rushed for over 3,000 in his high school career. He threw for a Class 6A record 140 touchdowns, breaking the mark set by Kyler Murray. King was a three-star prospect who signed with his hometown Houston Cougars over TCU. He began his collegiate career as a wide receiver but took over as the starting quarterback in the final four games of 2017. 

King eventually transferred to Miami in 2020, where he first met then Hurricanes offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee – now the head coach at SMU. King threw for 2,686 yards and 23 touchdowns in 2020 at Miami. He also ran for 538 yards and four scores. King played the 2023 spring season for D.C. in the XFL. 

King takes over a quarterback room that includes Preston Stone and Kevin Jennings. The Mustangs went 11-2 in the 2023 regular season, including a road win in the AAC championship game against Tulane. SMU is moving to the AAC in 2024.
