Stephen F. Austin head coach Colby Carthel is set to do something he hasn’t done since the beginning of his career as a head coach. Carthel is searching for a new offensive coordinator after his longtime assistant, Matt Storm, announced his departure on Twitter/X.
The two first worked together on staff at West Texas A&M in 2012. The following season, Carthel became the head coach at Texas A&M-Commerce and hired Storm to be his offensive coordinator. They led the Lions to the 2017 NCAA Division II national title. Storm followed Carthel to Nacogdoches in 2018 and helped lead the Lumberjacks to the Western Athletic Conference championship last season.
Storm mentored Lions quarterback Luis Perez to the Harlon Hill Award in 2017, given to the DII national player of the year and often called the ‘Heisman’ of DII. Ten players coached by Storm have earned All-American honors, and five of his athletes have a Conference Player of the Year award.
