ARLINGTON – It only took Terry Bussey and company one half of football to re-write the Class 2A Division I state championship game record books. Due to their efforts, the Timpson Bears are celebrating its first state football title in school history.

The Bears, led by Terry Bussey and Tyler Lane, dominated both sides of the ball in a 49-7 victory over Tolar. The Timpson (16-0) defense set the tone from the beginning, not allowing Tolar to score until the third quarter.

But the poise and playmaking ability of Texas A&M commit Bussey separated the Bears from the Rattlers on Wednesday. Bussey showed out in primetime with 155 yards and two touchdowns rushing while adding 311 yards and four touchdowns through the air and setting two Class 2A Division I state championship records.

Leading 7-0 early in the second quarter, Timpson took possession of the ball at its three-yard line following a 40-yard punt by Tolar’s Brooks Stone. Bussey threw the ball to Dacorian Johnson at the 10-yard line on a slant route, and Johnson raced past the Rattlers over the remaining 90 yards to the end zone to set the record for the longest touchdown pass in UIL state championship history at any classification.

Tolar (14-2) pinned the Bears deep again with 2:28 remaining in the first half. This time, Bussey took care of the next record himself, tiptoeing down the sideline before cutting back into the open field and leaving the Rattlers behind for a 93-yard touchdown run to set the Class 2A Division II record for the longest rushing touchdown in state championship history.

Tolar tried to use special teams multiple times to gain momentum, but the Bears had an answer each time. The Rattlers converted a fake punt in the first half and opened the second half by executing an onside kick. Isaac Blessing scored a one-yard touchdown ten plays later to give the Rattlers life down 21-7.

Amari Bruton immediately answered for the Bears and returned the ensuing kickoff 78 yards to extend Timpson’s lead back to three touchdowns. Bruton started down the right sideline and cut back to the left at midfield. That’s when the senior turned on the afterburners on his way to the endzone to secure the victory.

Bussey finishes his high school career, adding Offensive Most Valuable Player to his long list of accomplishments. Among his accomplishments is joining Kyler Murray as the only high school juniors named Mr. Texas Football.

However, Bussey wasn’t the only Bear to shine under the bright lights. Tyler Lane was named Defensive MVP after terrorizing the Tolar offense to the tune of 17 tackles (12 solo), two tackles for loss, and one sack.

Tolar was led by senior Isaac Blessing, who earned 108 yards and a touchdown rushing while adding 71 yards passing. The Rattlers' offense suffered a big blow early when Garrison Nation was sidelined for the rest of the game due to injury after gaining 27 yards on six carries and catching one pass for 11 yards.
