Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy has entered the transfer portal, according to a report by Pete Thamel of ESPN. Murphy impressed the coaching staff during the offseason and was listed as the backup to starting quarterback Quinn Ewers.
Murphy started two games and led the Longhorns to two victories while Ewers was injured. He threw for 170 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start against BYU. Murphy threw for 248 yards and a touchdown the following week in a 33-30 victory over Kansas State.
The redshirt freshman attempted nine passes during his other five appearances in a game for Texas in 2023. The 4-star prospect from Inglewood, Calif., will have plenty of suitors across the FBS. Murphy was ranked as the ninth-best quarterback by 247 Sports out of Junipero Serra High School and competed at the 2021 Elite 11 Finals in Los Angeles.
