TCU is hiring former Boise State head coach Andy Avalos to be its next defensive coordinator. Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer at 247 Sports were first to report.

Avalos, the 2022 Mountain West Coach of the Year, went 22-14 in three seasons at Boise State. He was fired in November after posting a 5–5 mark in 2023. He was an assisant at Boise State from 2012-2018 and served as defensive coordinator his final three seasons. As coordinator, his defenses led the Mountain West in sacks, ranked second in rush defense and third in total defense. Prior to becoming the Boise State head coach, Avalos had a two-season stint as Oregon's defensive coordinator. The Ducks won the Pac-12 each season with a defense headlined by Kayvon Thibodeaux.

Sonny Dykes and company had a replacement lined up when they surprisingly relieved Joe Gillespie of his duties on Sunday, more than two weeks removed from season's end. The Horned Frogs crashed back down to earth after making the national championship in Gillespie's first season, plummeting to tenth in the Big 12 in total defense. The move signals TCU will pivot from the 3-3-5 stack in favor of Avalos's nickel personnel.
