Texas and Oklahoma agreed to extend the Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl through 2036, according to a press release sent out by both universities.
The city of Dallas had agreed to make the single largest investment in the Cotton Bowl Stadium’s history with an estimated $140 million in renovations over a two-year period. The two rivals have met in the State Fair since 1029 and in Cotton Bowl Stadium since it was built in 1930. Texas and Oklahoma first played each other in 1900 with the Sooners winning the 119th meeting in October of this year.
Expected improvements include widening courses and adding escalators, as well as renovations to restrooms and concession stands. The first phase of the renovation to the west side of the stadium are expected to be complete by 2026. The second phase on the east side won’t be done until approximately 2034.
Texas and Oklahoma will play as SEC opponents for the first time in 2024.
