Benjamin (14-0) vs. Oglesby (13-0) - 2 p.m. Wednesday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington
It’s reigning state champion against title stage newcomer as Benjamin defends its 1A Division II crown against Oglesby in one of only four matchups of unbeatens this weekend. Oglesby had high expectations entering the season — DCTF ranked them No. 2 in the preseason — and the Tigers have more than lived up to them, running to their first state championship on the back of hard-charging running back Kyler Fossett. The junior sensation averages 17.5 yards per carry and has 52 touchdowns on the season, and also stars on defense alongside stars like Landon Williamson. But as good as Oglesby has been, and as worthy of focus as they are, there’s one question and one question only that’ll determine the outcome of this state title contest: can someone — anyone — slow down Grayson Rigdon? The Benjamin mega-star is a two-time state champion, three-time state title game MVP, a Mr. Texas Football Player of the Year finalist and and, quite simply, the most outstanding player in six-man football, hard stop. He’s the Mustangs’ leading rusher, passer, receiver (somehow?) and defensive playmaker. He’s far from alone, too — freshman Keegan Hayes is the next big thing. Oglesby should find some success in the running game, as Benjamin’s been lit up on the ground before, but until someone solves the Grayson Rigdon riddle, the Mustangs are the clear favorite.
