Baylor is turning to former Texas State head coach and current Cal offensive coordinator, Jake Spavital, sources confirm to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. The Golden Bears averaged 31.6 points per game in 2023, more than a touchdown more than the year before Spavital arrived. The Oklahoma native has plenty of Texas ties. He began his coaching career as a GA at Houston and rose to offensive coordinator in 2014. He was the head coach at Texas State from 2019 through 2022. 

Baylor decided to keep head coach Dave Aranda for at least the 2024 season with a few caveats. One, the former defensive coordinator will take over play calling duties for the defense. Two, he was to hire an offensive coordinator with head coaching experience so that Aranda could do less micromanaging so he can spend time fixing a defense that allowed two more touchdowns per game in 2023 than it did during 2021. 

Baylor went 3-9 in 2023 and have posted three losing seasons in four years under Aranda. The other was a 12-win 2021 campaign that culminated in Big 12 and Sugar Bowl championships. Aranda is 23-25 as a head coach at Baylor. He’s 9-16 overall and 6-12 in the Big 12 since signing an extension through 2029. Sources suggest the buyout is close to $20 million dollars.
