A season of firsts continues for UTPB with the unveiling of the NCAA Division II playoff bracket on Sunday. The Falcons earned the third seed in Super Region Four and will host Bemidji State from Minnesota at Astound Broadband Stadium in Midland in the first round.
The Falcons secured their first Lone Star Conference title in program history outright with a 42-14 win over Central Washington to close the regular season. The Wildcats of CWU also made the field as the seventh seed and will travel to play Western Colorado in the opening round.
Should UTPB defeat Bemidji in the first round, they would set up a rematch against the winner of CWU and Western Colorado. The Mountaineers are the only team to beat the Falcons this season.
Reigning Super Region Four champion and national semifinalist, Colorado School of Mines is the top seed after finishing 11-0 in the regular season. The Orediggers will meet the winner of Minnesota State at Augustana in the second round.
Some thought Angelo State and Texas A&M-Kingsville figured they might have a chance to sneak into the playoffs after a wild final weekend across the country. However, three losses by the Rams and Javelinas proved too much to overcome.
